Behind the Scenes at the National Stationery Show

Wow, it’s hard to believe that the National Stationery Show has already come and gone! This trade show is our biggest one of the year and something we start preparing for months and months in advance. So when I say we spent all of 2015 so far gearing up for 3.5 days in the Javits Center, it's no joke!

Knowing all of the sweat and tears that goes into a trade show, first thing you want to do is get retailers and potential customers excited about coming to your booth. The pre-show mailer is an excellent opportunity to do just that. This year we decided to give attendees a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the days leading up to the show. The idea came about after Clayton, having never experienced a trade show himself, wanted to know what actually goes on in preparation. We told him all about the good, the bad, and the ugly, and then he turned it into a mailer.

RECAP: Everything fit in Kate's hatchback (and Deb's mom's SUV). It was fairly quick drive to NYC, only to get stuck in a street demonstration as soon as we hit the car dealerships along 11th Avenue. When we arrived inside the Javits, crates completely overtook our aisle but fortunately none had been left in our booth. But it still made for a good photo op. Kate and I got started on the booth before Deb arrived with her to-scale booth plans. We messed up and had to start again. That's what happens when you veer from the map.

RECAP: We still only have one step stool (gifted to us by our friends at flip & tumble). But fortunately we replaced the rickety IKEA death trap—I mean, chairswith something more sturdy, upping the safety factor. After a long day, everyone retired to their couches. Well, some of us have graduated to actual beds now. Both Kate and Deb enjoyed their morning runs; Deb in Central Park, and Kate in Brooklyn Bridge Park. I enjoyed my snooze button.

RECAP: We've finally learned to avoid the Starbucks line in the Javits at all costs. Instead, we rely on an extensive call tree where the first person to come across a Starbucks on his/her commute gets everybody's orders. This often leads to confusing texts and having no idea why there is a Mexican hot drink waiting for you. (Wait, I thought you wanted an olé, says Clayton.) Caffeine aside, I have to say we were thrilled to show off our new corner booth! It filled up with customers pretty quickly, and I didn't even have to wear the sandwich board!

RECAP: Oh So Beautiful Paper hosted another amazing rooftop party (thanks, Nole!). That's how the crew looks like after being in the Javits for an extended period of time. We're hoping the effects are not long term.

Stepping Up for Education

Breakthrough Greater Boston hosted its annual gala last week, and I felt fortunate to be one of the over 400 individuals in attendance. Founded in Cambridge, Breakthrough has been providing year-round educational services to low-income middle and high school students since 1992. For these students, the rigorous six-year (yes, six!) and tuition-free (yes, free!) out-of-school program makes all the difference in achieving academic success and attending college.

The evening was abuzz with mingling, tasting of local eats, and making of bouncy balls (a science demo led by Breakthrough students). Former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick was presented with the inaugural Breakthrough Spirit Award in recognition of his efforts to address educational inequity. All of this unfolded against the expansive views of the Boston Harbor. Even so the main event was listening to the students.

Current and former students spoke with eloquence beyond their years about their time at Breakthrough and the personal impact it has had. I didn't have to be convinced of Breakthrough's impressive work but the students' stories put a face on how such programming transforms lives. Kate and I are honored to play an ever-so-small role by donating notebooks to be used as part of the gala's giveaway and would like to thank the Breakthrough team and its students for a wonderful night. Not surprisingly, it an enormous success (I encourage you to read their recap here)!

For the Love of Letterpress

This past Saturday, we spent the afternoon at Angela Liguori's lovely studio. As a lover of letterpress, she kindly invited Smudge Ink to run a printing demo for people to come see and learn about the craft. Angela does not need much introduction as she is well known as THE source for the prettiest ribbons to grace a package. It was a delight to be surrounded by her custom ribbons and wares—the smallest details perfectly arranged, of course.

The day was a wonderful opportunity to educate letterpress enthusiasts as well as connect with the design and printing community in Boston. Margaret's demo was quite the hit, and most everyone left with a postcard which they had printed themselves. Albertine Press, Robinson Press, and Pressbound were also showcasing their beautiful work (see their cards below in same order) and lending their expertise.

I especially enjoyed chatting with Angela and hearing about how Studio Carta came into being. I learned about how she got her start in making marbled paper and left Italy to study at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. One of her studio walls is lined entirely with her handbound books, which both Margaret and I poured over in amazement. Thank you, Angela, for being such a welcoming host and inspiring artist.

An Awesome Night: Holiday Sip & Shop

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Holiday Sip & Shop on November 5th! The Smudge Ink studio was abuzz with activity on the day of the event. Hours before our guests arrived, we were busy rearranging and redecorating. Clayton expertly drew the logos for Idle Hands Craft Ales, Goodtime Stringband and the Sip & Shop hashtag on our brand new blackboard (on which we now play Hangman on Wednesdays), while Kate, Deb and Sabrina worked on sprucing up our walls. By 5 pm, the studio was filled with tables covered with Smudge Ink stationery, floral arrangements, handmade ceramics, and plenty of olives and chocolate truffles. We were all set for fun evening. Goodtime Stringband’s bluegrass tunes had everyone bopping as guests browsed the booths of our friends at ElizabethBenotti Ceramics, Salt Cellar Shop, Wild Folk Studio, 2 Fresh Threads, EHChocolatier,Northlight Baking Co, Idle Hands Craft Ales, Whole Foods Charlestown, and Boston Organics.

Margaret and Emily’s letterpress demonstration on the Vandercook, affectionately nicknamed “Cookie,” drew a lot of curious guests of all ages. Everyone who tried their hand at letterpress printing got to keep their very own “Greetings from Boston” postcard featuring a design of Boston’s skyline with a silver and red palette. Some of our tinier attendees insisted on printing multiple postcards for their mom AND dad.

The evening was a great success and we had a blast sipping, snacking and shopping the night away. Sarah Jayne Photography took beautiful photos of the event so be sure to visit the Smudge Ink Facebook page and view the full photo album. All in all, we’ve had a wonderful start to our holiday season!
