The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: January

As business owners, we constantly find ourselves experiencing both the good and not-so-good aspects of running a small business. Some days we are glowing in the aftermath of a completed custom project and other days we feel frustrated because of a logistical snafu involving an outgoing order. Each day, each month, each year presents us with highs and lows, and we thought it would be fun to talk about these experiences here on the blog. We're calling the series “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” We hope you enjoy it!

Papier
THE GOOD (as told by Kate). We’re excited to announce a new licensing partnership with Papier, an online stationery company based in the UK. Papier was launched less than a year ago in London by an art historian who saw an opportunity to provide good design and convenience in the UK stationery market. Since launch, they've been growing rapidly, and you can see why as their website is beautiful and easy to use—not to mention they have an impressive selection of cards and invitations of which we are thrilled to be a part! You can view our selection of stationery offered through Papier here.

Licensing is not a new endeavor for us as we’ve been working with other online stationers, like Tiny Prints and Fine Stationery, for several years. These partnerships provide us with an additional source of revenue but more importantly they allow Smudge Ink to reach a larger audience looking to personalize holiday cards, invitations, and social stationery with the click of a button. To top it off, we don’t have to hold any inventory (hallelujah!). We’ve also been learning what designs do better or worse than others in a broader marketplace. Certainly, it has taken time to build these relationships and gain traction with each partner, but the investment has been worthwhile, and we feel like we’re in a good place with all of our licensing partners.

Counting Inventory
THE BAD (as told by Deb). The bane of our existence at the end of every calendar year is the inventory count. In order to have an accurate inventory asset number for our taxes it literally requires that we hand-count everything in the studio, from the envelopes and greeting cards to every sheet of paper and acetate sleeve. The bulk of this work falls on Sarah, our office manager, sometime between Christmas and New Year's. It’s not glamorous but there is satisfaction in knowing exactly what we have and purging old stuff that has no business being counted as inventory—sort of like starting with a clean slate.

As a small business and given that we produce many of our products in-house, our system of tracking inventory has never been very technical. Years ago, we looked into a custom system (too pricey at the time), and at one point we tried to use the manufacturing version of Quickbooks to track inventory, but found there were too many parts and too many opportunities to make mistakes in order for it to work.

Instead, we've found ways to make it easier on ourselves. It comes down to an organized inventory room (which is a no-brainer) and one very handy tool: a paper scale. We picked up a paper scale a few years back when B. Designs closed up shop to explore new pastures and have found it to be indispensable even if we use it only once a year. It's accurate to the card and saves literally hours of time.

THE NOT-SO-UGLY (as told by Sabrina). I’d like to take a moment and recognize the fact that no one in the studio is currently suffering from a cold. Thank you.

Getting Organized: Perpetual Calendar

Mailing cards to my friends and family in a TIMELY manner has never been my forte. The belated birthday card was created for folks like me. A part of me knows it’s the thought that counts, but another part is shaking its finger at me for letting this habit of mine get worse and worse. Rather than resign myself, I have just the trick to motivate me to stay on track—our new perpetual calendar!

Getting Organized with a Perpetual Calendar | Smudge Ink
Just having all of the birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones I don’t want to forget listed in a separate calendar will be a huge help. Oftentimes, they get lost in the shuffle of daily appointments and deadlines that make up my Google calendar. Plus, I would much much rather look at a beautiful letterpress print over my phone any day!

Getting Organized with the Perpetual Calendar | Smudge Ink
I’m already feeling more organized and prepared by writing down the dates month by month. Another benefit of using the perpetual calendar is that I’ll be better about having cards and gifts ready ahead of time. I really dislike sending something just because I waited until the day of and it was all I could find at the grocery store. Not that there is anything wrong with the grocery store, but I really do enjoy searching for the right card or gift. Now I can stockpile by month so that I have everything I need when I need it.

And the best part, come next year, all I have to do is turn another page!

For Sale: Chandler & Price 10 x 15 Press

UPDATE: This press is no longer available for sale.

Chandler and Price Press For SaleThirteen years ago on a warm August day, I drove around western Massachusetts in a rental truck picking up three presses: one Vandercook proofing press and two Chandler & Price platen presses. It was a long day of driving, but I managed to transport all three machines safely to my studio on the Cape where we proceeded to spend a lot of time together. This was the beginning of Smudge Ink.

Since then, all of our presses served a distinct purpose in helping us build our ever growing product line. We introduced a few Heidelbergs to the Smudge Ink family six years ago and this has made a huge impact in our production efficiencies. Because of this, one of our Chandler & Price's is rarely used and so we've decided to find it a new home. We know there is someone out there who will love this beautiful hunk of metal as much as we have.

Interested or know anyone who is? Check out more details below. You can also see the listing here.

Breakthrough Cookie Drop

We've made a business based on our love for art and design, so when we heard that our friends at Breakthrough Greater Boston were short on funding to buy art supplies for their summer students, we immediately started our very first Crowdrise campaign. For a modest sum of $580, the summer program would be fully stocked up on paints, brushes, and paper— the basic tools any kid needs to explore his or her creative side.

(image: an idea is hatched!)

While there were instant likes and hearts after promoting the fundraising campaign through social media, the donations were only trickling in, and we worried we wouldn't make the goal on time. We had an impromptu brainstorming session about how to inspire folks to donate, during which Sabrina came up with the idea of telling our network of customers, vendors, friends, and family that I would personally bake cookies for the kids in the summer program if we achieved the goal. What a great way to "sweeten" the deal— ha!

Thanks to some awesome people (that's you, if you're reading this and donated!), we exceeded the goal by 28 percent (a combination of Crowdrise donations and checks made out directly to Breakthrough Greater Boston)! As promised, I spent one evening baking several batches of chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodles. Admittedly, I love to bake, so it was certainly not a chore.

The next day, Sarah took a short break from work on a beautiful summer day to help me deliver all of the cookies at Breakthrough's Dorchester location. We took a few wrong turns getting there, which wouldn’t be that embarrassing except that Sarah lives in Dorchester and we had the GPS directing us. Eventually, we arrived at the hallways of Tech Boston Academy. While there, we experienced some serious high school flashbacks as we walked past the classrooms and lockers, smelling of fresh paint as prep work for the new school year was underway.

The cookie drop went off without a hitch, and we are so happy that we were able to support such hardworking kids! Many thanks to Oompa Williams for enthusiastically greeting us and graciously accepting the cookies on behalf of the students.

The Best of Boston

We love you too, Boston! We are so grateful for all of our fans. Because of your support, Boston Magazine named us Best Wedding Stationery in their Best of Boston issue (still pinching ourselves!). Working one-on-one with couples on custom letterpress invitations and announcements was how Smudge Ink got its start. More than 10 years later, we continue to enjoy and cherish this part of our job. Thank you for inviting us to play a part in your celebrations all over Boston and beyond.

With Best of Boston on our minds, we did a small roundup of local spots and establishments that we find quite remarkable. Here are the winners of our unofficial poll:

BEST BOOKSTORE (Sarah): Brookline Booksmith isn't just my favorite bookstore, it's one of my favorite places on the planet! Whether I'm in the mood for a great children's book, classic, or new release, their collection never disappoints. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and makes excellent recommendations. Be sure to check out their author event series. (Also among the Boston Magazine winners!).

BEST COFFEE SHOP (Rheanna): Hands down, PS Gourmet Coffee in South Boston has the best ice coffee flavors. It’s not called home of the “bucket” for nothing.

BEST GYM (Clayton). Brooklyn Boulders in Somerville. Why? Indoor Rock Climbing. Free classes such as yoga and "broga" with purchase of a membership. Free trade coffee. Ping pong tables. Monthly complimentary beer tasting. Super awesome and friendly staff!

BEST RECORD STORE (Margaret): Deep Thoughts in Jamaica Plain is not only a great source for experimental music but also hosts great shows. (Also among the Boston Magazine winners!).

BEST FOOD TRUCK (Henry): Roxy’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese has turned an ordinary menu item into one of my all-time favorites. Go for the Green Muenster which has guac AND bacon on it. And I dare you to resist their french fries with rosemary and gorgonzola cheese.

BEST BRUNCH (Emily): Vee Vee in Jamaica Plain. I'm also really digging the art on display right now.

BEST GROCERY STORE (Sabrina): Thanks to H-Mart in Central Square, my fridge is stocked with kimchi, tofu, frozen dumplings, and other essentials. I end up going there a lot during the summer. My husband loves to bring their marinated beef bulgogi to BBQ parties.
