Holiday Baking: Our Combined Colossal Cookie Cutter Collections

Holiday Baking | Blog | Smudge InkSeems it's the time of year to bake. Every holiday season, I usually make 5 to 6 different kinds of cookies and put together boxes for neighbors, friends and co-workers. It's one of my favorite things to do and is usually accompanied by a good mix of holiday music. It turns out that I'm not the only one at Smudge Ink who enjoys this ritual. Both Sarah and Erin also love to bake, and we discovered our shared weakness for collecting cookie cutters.

Cookie Cutters | Blog | Smudge InkPerhaps this doesn't appeal to all, but to the three of us, a morning of baking every cookie in our combined cutter collections sounded like fun. And it was! I personally have cookie cutters that I've never actually used, so it was especially gratifying to break in some previously unused ones. (We all have our things.)

Holiday Baking | Blog | Smudge InkIt took two large batches of dough, but we succeeded in baking and decorating around 100 cookies, if not more (I did not count). We had the regular suspects: stars, hearts, flowers, snowflakes. We had some "randoms": a strong man, a tooth, a chili pepper. We had a full array of Star Wars cutters thanks to Erin (Yoda is my favorite!).

Holiday Baking | Blog | Smudge InkBut our fullest collection came in the form of animals including a lion and a bear (reminder: must find tiger cookie cutter!). There were also cats, dogs, a hedgehog, a whale, an alligator, a buffalo, a pony, a lobster, an owl, a cardinal, a mouse, a rooster, a moose, a loon, a chicken, a fox, and an elephant. Sarah even found MORE cookie cutters back home that she had forgotten about after our bake off.

Holiday Baking | Blog | Smudge InkWe had a great time kicking off the holiday cookie season together. Plus, it provided about a week's worth of baked treats at the studio. May the sweet and buttery force be with you this holiday season!

HOLIDAY PLAYLIST: Shake Up The Season!

HOLIDAY PLAYLIST: Shake Up The Season! This playlist is for the non-traditionalist. It's got synth, electric bells and guitars, wrapping, randomness, jokes, heavy bass, and drum solos that might just inspire the little drummer boy to throw down a beat with flare. This is not easy listening, but rather jingle balls of rollicking fun! So make like Rooney and T-Swift and shake up and shake off that holiday hustle and bustle!

HOLIDAY PLAYLIST: Holidays with A Twang

Holiday Playlist: Holidays with A Twang | Smudge InkIt's the most wonderful time of the year, and if you're like a lot of Christmas music enthusiasts, you've probably been cranking that dial to Yuletide stations no later than post Thanksgiving. Most of us have already listened to Mariah a bazillion times at this point (though I continue to) and it's almost too soon to blare "Carol of the Bells" (I feel like that's a Christmas Eve type of song; maybe I've just seen Home Alone too many times). And speaking of home, as a northern Californian, there's nothing that makes me feel more at home than some country music and a scenic back road. So even if twang is a bit out of your comfort zone, give it a try. You may find yourself humming along to some good ole country Christmas anthems. And if not, we've got a few other Christmas playlists to follow soon!

Holiday Gift Guide for the Kids

I'm always on the lookout for great gifts for my two young kids and their friends (so many birthday parties!). It's actually quite fun to find things I know they will use, play with, and love. Here are a few of my picks for this holiday season!

Holiday Gift Guide for Kids | Blog | Smudge Ink1) In our family, we travel a lot to visit family and friends. Sometimes we drive and sometimes we fly, but we always have a good time. I love that my boys are interested in visiting new places, and we're hoping to get a subscription to Little Passports this holiday season!

2) Kids love making things and using their imaginations. These connecting pieces can be used to make patterns and even 3-D structures all while practicing fine motor skills and trial and error to fit everything together just right.

3) Trivia is great for dinner conversation, long car rides, and for generally impressing your friends. This book is full quizzes with interesting answers. Quiz each other or read facts soloeither way it's bound to be an interesting read!

4) So many kids are into superheroes, and why not? They're awesome! This kid-owned company has a really interesting take on the superhero trend: celebrate what makes YOU super! The capes are adorable and highlight kids' gifts—from math to kindness, they're super.

5) Nobody Likes A Goblin is a picture book that has all you could ask for: goblins, skeletons, adventurers, a goose, doom! It's a fun romp that you won't mind reading 2 or 3 times in a row and there's a nice lesson about friendship to boot.

6) If you want to get a shirt your kid will love, check out these super soft tees. Plus the neck holes are a little wider than usual to make it really easy for little kids to dress themselves. Oh, and did I mention that the designs are ridiculously cute? (Note: they're based in Australia.)

7) In my experience, kids really enjoy writing and delivering letters. E.B. Goodale's new mini notes make this activity even more fun. What better than writing a teeny note on a super sweet folded card and popping it into a colorful envelope?

Holiday Gift Guide for the Hostess/Host

Ah, whatever to do when you want to bring something other than a re-gifted bottle of wine to a holiday party? Personally, when it comes to hostess gifts, I try to find something that is first and foremost useful. I think of items that I'd really like to have but wouldn't necessarily buy for myself. That’s not to say a bottle of wine isn’t a perfectly acceptable (and welcomed) gift, but in case you’re seeking alternatives, here are a few ideas!

Holiday Gift Guide for the Hostess | Blog | Smudge Ink1) I received a holiday reindeer bottle opener similar to this one last year, and I love it! It’s a perfect gift that can be used immediately upon opening it. As an add-on, you could bring along some bottles to open up!

2) This Harney & Sons holiday tea comes highly recommended by Sarah, our resident tea connoisseur. If Sarah approves, I know it’s good! This blend will complement your favorite fruitcake on a chilly evening, and when the tea is gone, you can use the attractive tin for a holiday planter! PS: The fruitcake reference is a joke, for most, but I happen to be in the minority here and love fruitcake, at least my mom’s!

3) A “higher end” cocktail mixer is always something I like to receive because it definitely falls in the category of something I wouldn’t purchase for myself! How fun to try a festive cocktail with very little effort. You could pair this mixer with a libation of choice (or as suggested on the bottle) for your host or hostess to make the gift even more “festive!”

4) Smudge Ink's mini calendar will take you through 2017! (Let’s hope for a good one!) It’s a nice compact size (approximately 3.5 square inches) that will fit nicely on anyone’s desk, kitchen window sill, mantle, or wherever you need a quick reminder of the date!

5) Kitchen or tea towels are great to have around, especially during the holiday season when there is always people eating and cooking and food aplenty. I've been a fan of these linen hand towels by The Everyday Co. If you pair with another small gift, you can use the towel as wrapping too!

6) I do love the smell of a spruce candle at the holidays! This one is handmade in California, 100% soy-based, and understated in design. It has an ever-so-trendy “general store” look to it and can sit on your mantle or kitchen counter well into the new year without screaming “I haven’t put away my holiday stuff yet!”
